MLDAS - Local, Venue, Lodging and Visa Information

MLDAS venue. The symposium will be held in the Tornado Tower (5th Floor) in the West Bay area of Doha. Click here for a map.

Doha - the capital of the State of Qatar is a modern city located on the coast of the Persian Gulf. Weather in Doha at the beginning of March tends to be sunny and pleasantly warm (average highs 20-27°C, 68-80°F). You can check out the current weather forecast.

Lodging. The MLDAS preferred hotel is the W Doha. It is within waliking distance (10 minutes) from the Tornado Tower.
The following two hotels are located within 3-5 minutes of walking time from the symposium venue: Renaissance Doha, Courtyard by Marriott Doha. Other hotels located within 10-15 minutes of walking to the Tornado Tower include: Four Seasons Doha, Hilton Doha, Kempinski Residences Doha, Sheraton Doha, Mövenpick Doha.

Travel Visa. Attendees from many countries will need a visa or other forms of travel authorization for entry into Qatar. Entry visa rules can be complex. Therefore, please check the regulations and how they apply to travelers in advance. Registered participants should contact the organizers of the symposium if they need a visa.

Transportation and Distances. The Doha International Airport is served by a large number of major airlines from all continents.
West Bay Doha and the W Doha hotel are about 18 kilometers away from the airport and can be reached by taxi or limousine services.
We recommend the taxi services as they are the least expensive option. Turquoise/blue taxis marked with the "Karwa" sign are available to the right as you exit the arrivals terminal in Doha. We do not recommend that symposium attendees rent a car in Doha.

Currency. The official currency of the State of Qatar is the Qatari Riyal. One Qatari Riyal is valued at 0.27 US Dollars (approximately 0.20 Euros).
ATMs are available in the arrivals terminal of the Doha International Airport right accross from the baggage claim belts. The W Doha hotel has an ATM in its lobby. All other major hotels and shopping centers also provide ATMs.

Electricity in Qatar is 240V / 50Hz AC. The electrical sockets are similar to the ones in Great Britain. See this photo for the type of plugs that work in Qatar.

Cell phones from other countries will typically require roaming capabilities. Cellular phone coverage in Doha is excellent, basically served by two companies.
